Novena for Reformation of the Catholic Church Hierarchy

Day 1

God of heaven, you hear the cries of the desolate, confused, and despondent. The anguish of your people is not unknown to you. But what are we? We are but sheep in a flock, none of us able to repulse the wolves in our midst. We are lost, unmoored and crying out in desperation to you, almighty God! We share in the uncertainty Mary and the apostles felt while awaiting your son in the upper room. Where can we turn without trust in our Church? We turn to you, our steadfast Father. Save us, oh Lord.

Everlasting God, your son rose from the dead and brought new life to a world covered in darkness. In this our dark hour, we remember the hope of the resurrection and the promises it fulfilled. Increase our faith in you, most high God.

  Day 2

Lord of Hosts, you gave us Peter as our foundation. Through him, You instituted a church, a hierarchy, to guide the people of this earth to you. Now, as in ages past, human men have used your church to gain power, wealth, privilege and honor. They have placed their pride above the well-being of the flock, choosing to protect their reputations before innocent children. Convinced their power and honor came from themselves because of their actions, and not your will, they sought to preserve their earthly distinction.

Jesus Christ, we call to you our good shepherd, who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give your life as ransom for others, bring to our cardinals and bishops a docile spirit towards your will. Sweet victim on the cross, punished for our sins, inspire our hierarchy to greater self-sacrifice for the good of your church.

Day 3

God of love and mercy, we depend on the examples of your most holy saints. We look to St. Peter Damian, who was reluctant to assume greater power, but proceeded with fortitude in a spirit of obedience to your greater will. We gain inspiration from St. Catherine of Siena’s mission to reunite your church. Despite her family’s reluctance, murderous enemies, great distances, still St. Catherine pursued your will. We recall the kind of life St. Teresa of Avila led, consumed by vanity, and dominated by a desire for friends, until you called her to leave those affections behind and converse with your angels. Her conversations led her

Almighty father, encourage our hearts to reform the lacking institutions around us. Grant us fortitude to pursue your will despite retributions and hostility. Help us to see your face in the complaints and anger of those who would resist, all the while pursuing a greater charity in you. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Day 4

“The unity of the Mystical Body produces and stimulates charity among the faithful: “From this it follows that if one member suffers anything, all the members suffer with him.” Indeed, Lord, we suffer with our brothers and sisters who have fallen prey to the most depraved members of our Church and whose wounds were exacerbated by those entrusted with the care of your sheep. Help us to understand the burdens placed on the victims in our communities, that we may better serve them in your name. Help us to be a strong, peaceful haven for those who have suffered at the hands of those they trusted most.

Oh Lord, who was maligned and debased at the hands of sinners, though you yourself were blameless, give us tender hearts of understanding for the pain of our injured brothers and sisters.

Day 5

Oh Lord my God, you entrusted your flock to human men, knowing their strengths and their weaknesses. Your word was read to them and by them in every mass, but they paid no heed to it. At every turn, they disparaged your word and placed their will above yours, which commanded them to protect the least among us—women, children, sick and dying. Though they brushed aside your word, we remember what you told us in the Psalms: “Will these evildoers never learn? They devour my people as they devour bread; they do not call upon the Lord. They have good reason, then, to fear; God is with the company of the just. They would crush the hopes of the poor, but the poor have the Lord as their refuge.”

Let us pray: Almighty God, champion of the abused, hope of the oppressed and vanquisher of the vicious and shameless; inspire in our hierarchy a most holy and awesome fear of you, who are all powerful and deserving of all high praise.

Day 6

Oh Jesus, our beloved savior, we know you mourn with us the loss of trust your faithful priests suffer as a result of their brothers’ actions. When your entrusted bishops and cardinals failed to serve your flock, they failed themselves as well. They chose to preserve the livelihood of their friends, rather than the lives of the sheep, who would have been grateful to know they had been spared. In seeking to preserve their own lives and reputations, they demolished the prospects of future priests across our land.

Let us pray, Heart of Jesus, patient and most merciful, grant unto your elect the wisdom needed to feed and tend your lambs. Grant unto our shepherds, oh Lord, good judgment in the face of great obstacles.

Day 7

All-knowing and ever-living God, you have called your sheep to yourself and we answer. Though we are faltering and afraid, we answer your call. We seek to know truth in you and your word and we bring before you our failings and the failings of our hierarchy. We cannot shut our eyes any longer to the abuses happening around us; they are too great to ignore and too great to bear on our own.

God almighty, you know the breadth and depth of the crisis in our Church. Present to us those who would illuminate the darkness, that we might know the way to reform your church and hierarchy. We ask this through Christ your son. Amen

Day 8

Oh Jesus, source of all consolation, how greatly we and our hierarchy have failed you in aiding the abused. Too often when victims came to laity, we did not believe them. When they insisted, their concerns were minimized. When their loved ones advocated on their behalf, the victims were defamed. When priests admitted grave acts, it was ignored or defended. When bishops’ actions and willful inactions to preserve the status of abusers were exposed, nothing was done.

Holy Spirit, create in us open hearts of understanding and good counsel. Help us to hear our neighbor without judgment, pride or fear, while informing our hearts of the words needing to be heard.

 Day 9

All holy and ever-living God, you gave us your son as expiation for our sins. No greater gift has ever been given, no greater love has ever been known. But for your love of the blameless, Noah’s family would have been destroyed. If not for your love of the upright, Lot would have been incinerated. We know you will not throw your faithful in with the fate of the wicked.

Most just and loving God, give unto us a spirit of love to forgive those who have transgressed your church and defiled your name. Help us to show your face of love to those who have been most severely harmed in the pursuit of power and fame. All these we ask through your most holy son, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever.
